Sopot, Poland is the venue for the RS:X Youth European Windsurfing Championships. For the organisers, the championship will be part one of a double header which also includes the RS:X European Windsurfing Champinships.

The 2010 RS:X Open European Windsurfing Championships starts on June 25th and runs through to July 2nd. With 70 Youth Men and 20 Youth Women entered, this 2nd edition of the RS:X Youth Europeans can claim a recrd entry.

It will be a novel experience for the young windsurfers to have their prize giving in front of the Olympic stars gathered for the European Champinships. Usually they stand in the shadows as the Olympic Windsurfers bask in the limelight. This year roles will be reversed!

Racers from more than 10 countries in three continents are using the event as their last chance to build fitness and experience before the ISAF Youth Worlds in Istanbul, Turkey which starts on July 11th.

That is a perfectly understandable – In fact, you are not alone, I fell for all the hype about the windsurfing gear used in the Olympics being a ‘freak’

But, I have a little known fact to give you… and it is this:

The windsurfing gear that Nikos Kaklamanakis [GRE] won the 2009 Raceboard Worlds on was actually the Olympic windsurfing kit!

And get this, he was winning some races by such a large margin that he stopped just before the finishing line to give the other guys a chance to catch up. He’s a good sport!

Better still the sport is on the rise. Did you know that the International Boating Federation has launched a drive to develop windsurfing even more?

I guess not! I understand. They don’t make a good job of their role as key communicators
